Making their Chicago debut, Splinter Reeds is the West Coast’s first and only reed quintet comprising five virtuosic and innovative musicians with a shared passion for new music. An evolutionary detour from the traditional woodwind quintet, Splinter Reeds consists of a dynamic instrumentation that includes oboe (Kyle Bruckmann), clarinet (Bill Kalinkos), saxophone (David Wegehaupt), bass clarinet (Jeff Anderle), and bassoon (Dana Jessen). The sum of their wide ranges of experience – in settings including free jazz, improvisation, electronic music, punk and metal as well as classical – has enabled them to rapidly zero in on a specific aesthetic identity and commitment to the cutting edge of contemporary composition. Their Constellation program will feature the world premiere of a new work by Eric Wubbels alongside compositions by Sam Pluta, Alex Mincek, Yannis Kyriakides, Matthew Shlomowitz, and Ned McGowan.
