Double Door

So named thanks to entrances on Milwaukee and Damen avenues in Wicker Park, Double Door has operated as a 500-capacity rock venue since opening in 1994.

Other genres and subgenres are represented intermittently—and you might catch a DJ competition or multidisciplinary artist showcase—but midsize rock bands are its bread and butter.

The main room is long and large, a challenge for shorter folks. Thankfully, however, there are a few places to enjoy the show, whether in the upstairs pseudo-balcony at the back of the main room or the weird basement bar, “The Dirtroom,” which features pool tables and TVs to see the action. There’s no food served, so grab a bite ahead of time, and be wary of overpriced well liquor.

The quality of booking has fallen off since the mid- to late 2000s, but a number of great touring acts still make Double Door their top destination for Chicago gigs.
