June 14, 2017 @ 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm

MYKELE DEVILLE
https://mykeledeville.bandcamp.com/

Rapper Mykele Deville celebrates blackness and condemns its oppression through performances filled with “yearning, fury, sadness and eventually, a new, difficult-to-pin-down form of hope” (Chicago Tribune). With the release of his EP Peace, Fam and an opening slot for BJ the Chicago Kid, Deville is a steadily rising star in Chicago’s DIY scene: striving, inexorable, and startlingly beautiful.

The music of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Akenya Seymour lies at the center of a vast Venn diagram with spheres jazz, hip hop, soul, funk, and classical. Her mastery of genre yields music as delicate as it is commanding, with a growing roster of collaborators that includes Noname, Vijay Iyer, and Chance the Rapper.

JADE T. PERRY
https://jadetperry.com/

Jade T. Perry is a writer, speaker, and co-founder of Mystic Soul. With intricate prose and humorous empathy, her writing makes deep dives into blackness, womanism, and the chronic pain and joy of life before resurfacing with cathartic wisdom.

HALF GRINGA
https://halfgringa.bandcamp.com/

“…complex, nuanced music that pleases as much as it challenges” (Chicago Tribune): helmed by Izzy Olive, Half Gringa explores Midwestern Latinx selfhood with songs that specialize in the solemn, the wry, and the artfully candid. Posing questions with horns, guitars, and vocals, Half Gringa wants to know: what does it mean to be home when you’re from so many places?
