Led by composer, drummer and four-time Grammy nominee John Hollenbeck, The Claudia Quintet have quietly but definitively recast jazz into shimmering new shapes inflected by classical minimalism, new music, progressive rock and post-rock. They are one of the most influential stylists on other musicians in cutting-edge jazz today. The sound of jazz and what jazz can be in our time has changed because of their sound and stance. Celebrating over 15 years of working together, this NYC ensemble’s sound continues to explore the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone. The Claudia Quintet will be performing new works in celebration of their latest release “Super Petite” on Cuneiform Records.
Chris Speed – clarinet/tenor saxophone

“Rigorously executed but earthily grooving, dauntingly precise but flecked with hearty and intriguing improvised solos, the quintet’s set buzzed with freshness and vitality from start to finish.” – Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
“John Hollenbeck continues to astound as a composer, prone to value accessibility as much he does adventure… The overall effect is mesmerizing.” – DownBeat
“Hollenbeck often favors themes and rhythms that find their source in folkloric ‘world’ music, especially that of Africa and Brazil. Those themes and rhythms are often offset by the malleable, porous sound of the quintet’s unique instrumentation, which allows for passages of quiet lyricism.” – The Boston Globe
The New Republic – “What makes Hollenbeck’s music unique is not its formal innovation, though it is formally inventive and full of unusual ideas. It’s exceptional because it’s exceptionally good—neatly formed but loose in feeling, lucid, consistently interesting, and, above all, emotionally potent.”
