MATTHEW LUX’S COMMUNICATION ARTS QUARTET
Astral Spirits presents a double release show for two of our favorite Chicago acts!
Both cassette releases will be out September 22 and will be available at the show!
We had so much fun with “Astral Spirits in Chicago” last summer at the Hungry Brain we thought we’d come back to celebrate two new tape releases on the label featuring two more of our favorite Chicago groups.
Headlining is Matthew Lux’s Communication Arts Quartet feat. Lux alongside Ben Lamar Gay, Jayve Montgomery & Mikel Patrick Avery. They present their debut release “Contra/Fact.”
BILLINGTON / SHIPPY / WYCHE
Opening the show will be the trio of Ben Baker Billington (Tiger Hatchery, Quicksails), Mark Shippy (US Maple), and Daniel Wyche who are presenting their debut release “Billington/Shippy/Wyche.”
“In the last couple of years Austin label Astral Spirits has emerged as one of the more interesting labels in improvised music, usually issuing bold sounds by up-and-coming players on limited-run cassette releases” – Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
“The Austin based Astral Spirits is one of my favorite labels on the planet. I had a shot at writing about one of their last batches of cassettes, but, swamped with work, I dropped the ball, and have been kicking myself ever since – something I have no intention of repeating. The imprint got rolling in 2014. With a startling pace, they’ve issued some of the most ambitious release to have emerged during the subsequent years – largely focused on free-improvisation and various iterations of contemporary experiential music. With an incredible high bar, Astral Spirits represents a rare support infrastructure within this spectrum of sound – almost entirely dedicated to the present day, and to efforts that would otherwise remain hidden from view – presenting an astounding vision of the context” – Bradford Bailey, The Hum
