The Northshore Concert Band Opens Its 61st Season With Guest Soloist Gene Pokorny, Principal Tuba Of The Chicago Symphony Orchestra!
Please join us on November 6, 2016 as we welcome Gene Pokorny, Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for his first solo performance with the Northshore Concert Band!
The Northshore Concert Band opens its season of musical “Reflections” with a diverse program that embraces a world of freedom and fellowship. We are honored to welcome Gene Pokorny, Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra! Program highlights will include Magnolia Star, a jazz and blues-inspired work by emerging American composer Steve Danyew, and two works by Dmitri Shostakovich; the familiar and celebratory Festive Overture, which was written and premiered in just three days in 1954, and October, the composer’s only tone poem that depicts the struggle and triumph of humanity throughout history.
Northshore Concert Band’s musical leadership is provided by Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Mallory Thompson and Assistant Conductor Daniel Farris. Dr. Thompson is the director of bands, professor of music, coordinator of the conducting program, and holds the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University.
Mr. Farris is in his 16th year as Director of Athletic Bands at Northwestern University where he is responsible for conducting the Wildcat Marching Band and Concert Band, and teaching courses in conducting and music education. He has been the Assistant Conductor of the Northshore Concert Band since 2006.
