Paul Giallorenzo & Mikel Avery

February 5, 2017 @ 9:00 pm - 1:00 am

Free

Every Sunday, The Whistler and North Coast Brewing team up to present our favorite jazz artists. Tonight’s duo features Paul Giallorenzo on piano and Mikel Patrick Avery on drums.

Mikel Avery is recognized for his orchestral and melodic style of drumming that often involves the use of unconventional “non-musical” objects. Mikel is also a dedicated composer, photographer, producer and educator. In recent years, he’s become an integral voice in Rob Mazurek’s Moon Cycles, Joshua Abrams’s Natural Information Society, The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and Theaster Gates’s Black Monks of Mississippi. He also leads several of his own projects including 1/2 Size Piano Trio, PLAY, and a new conceptual dance company co-led with artist Amanda Avery called The Something Beautiful Movement Orchestra.

Paul Giallorenzo is an improviser, composer, and producer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a wide variety of groups and contexts, ranging from jazz and improvised music to electro-acoustic/noise to sound and video performance. He’s also co-founder of the music venue/art gallery Elastic, producing hundreds of concerts and events in Chicago since 2001.

North Coast Brewing is a proud supporter of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. For every case of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale sold, North Coast Brewing makes a contribution to the Institute in support of jazz education. To date they’ve contributed over one million dollars to the Institute.
