The longstanding electro-acoustic duo of Peter Evans (trumpet) and Sam Pluta (electronics) is joined by outstanding Chicago improvisers Katherine Young (bassoon) and Ben Lamar Gay (cornet).
Peter Evans (trumpet) and Sam Pluta (electronics) have been collaborating since 2008 in a wide variety of contexts. Their work together has been featured in the Peter Evans Quintet, Rocket Science (with Craig Taborn and Evan Parker), Parker’s USA Electro-Acoustic Septet, ICE and the Wet Ink Ensemble. In the duo format Pluta and Evans use all they have developed from their experience together to forge a new and dynamically interactive music. Since the release of their recordings Sum and Difference in 2011 and Event Horizon in 2014, they have persistently honed and refined their duo music into a fully formed type of electro-acoustic chamber music. Improvisation and a commitment to the explosive energy of sound itself informs the duo’s approach to real time composition.
Ben Lamar Gay is a composer who deals with many components of sound through various folk traditions past, present and future. Ben continues a long Chicago tradition of forward thinking musicians brought into existence by visceral dexterity and by the virtuosos of the Association of the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which he himself is a member.
Katherine Young creates electro-acoustic music that uses curious timbres, expressive noises, and kinetic structures to explore the dramatic physicality of sound, shifting interpersonal dynamics, and tensions between the familiar and the strange. As an improviser, Katherine amplifies her bassoon and employs a flexible electronics set-up for solo and collaborative performances.
