Akenya is a singer, pianist, composer, and arranger who brings together multiple musical worlds. Trained in jazz performance at the New England Conservatory, she’s played with jazz heavy hitters like Esperanza Spalding, Fred Hersch, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Luciana Souza, and Dave Holland. A Chicago native, she’s also a vital part of the dynamic and evolving hip-hop and soul scenes, having collaborated with some of the city’s leading artists including singing the hook on Chance the Rapper’s “Windows” and touring as musical director and opening act for Noname. The Fader recently previewed “Dissapear,” the lead single from her forthcoming full-length, Moon in the Fourth, calling it “an experimental blend of hip-hop, jazz, and soul.”
