The Resonance Series: Olivia Block, Mike Weis, MT Coast

December 14, 2016 @ 9:00 pm - 12:00 am

$10

The Resonance Series is explores different soundscapes and spaces at the Hideout, focusing on ambient, drone, and creative music.

Olivia Block creates electroacoustic sound compositions for performance, recordings, installations, cinema, orchestra and chamber music concerts.

Her solo performances include partially improvised pieces for electronics and amplified objects, presented in a slow and deliberate gestural style that Steve Smith of the New York Times described recently as having “palpable sensations of volition and emotional involvement.” Block also performs original pieces for inside piano. Her compositions often combine field recordings, chamber instruments and electronic textures. In addition to her compositions for solo recordings and performances, Block creates multimedia works for sounds and video and writes scores for large ensemble, string quartet, and orchestra.

Block has performed, premiered and exhibited her work throughout Europe, America, and Japan in tours in festivals including Incubate (Tilburg), Festival del Bosque Germinal (Mexico City), Sonic Light (Amsterdam), Kontraste (Krems), Dissonanze (Rome), Archipel (Geneva) Angelica (Bologna), Sunoni per il Popolo (Montreal), and many others. Additionally, she has presented work at the ICA (London), MCA (Chicago), La Biennale di Venezia 52nd International Festival of Contemporary Music, The Kitchen (NYC), ISSUE Project Room and Experimental Intermedia (Brooklyn).
She has completed residencies and premiered works at Mills College of Music, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The Berklee College of Music. Block has presented talks at additional universities in film, music, media arts, and anthropology departments, including Yale University, University of Chicago, and Indiana University. Her current interests include listening practices, ethnographic practices and sound for cinema, among many others.

Block has created sound installations for public sites and exhibition spaces including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the library at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, the Lincoln Conservatory Fern Room in Chicago, and at the “Echoes Through the Mountains” exhibit at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
Her latest LP/download release, Karren (Sedimental, 2013) has been chosen as “Best of 2014″ by The Wire, Pitchfork, and Artforum, among other publications.

For over a decade, Mike Weis’ main musical project has been with the Chicago band, Zelienople. However, within the last seven years he has branched out forming a trio with Scott Tuma and Matt Christensen called, Good Stuff House; a duo with Tuma and most recently an improvisation trio with Andre Foisy (Locrian) and Neil Jendon called, Kwaidan. He has also toured and recorded with England’s Xela and contributed percussion recordings for Germany’s Black To Comm, Sweden’s Jasper TX, and American acts such as Mind Over Mirrors, Morning Recordings and The North Sea. In 2011, New York’s Barge Recordings released his debut solo album, Loop Current/Raft and in May, Type Recordings is set to release the follow-up called, Don’t Know, Just Walk. The solo recordings layer Musique Concrete (field recordings, home-made instruments, electronic and vocal loops, etc.) with various world rhythms. However, for this live performance at Constellation Weis will be unplugged eschewing the electronic loops for straight, unaltered acoustic percussion.

Mike Weis – solo percussion

“There’s a potent and wholly enveloping atmosphere to the record, thanks in no small part to the sense of meditative restraint with which he conducts his kit, dividing himself between a vast array of gongs, temple block, claves, dholak, doumbeks, thunder tube, rattles and mbira, to name a few. The strange, hypnotic tension between tangibly synthetic electro-acoustic drone clouds and his undulating tribal rhythms at once suck us into his core pulse and inflate our sense of space to the peripheries of perception, ultimately leaving us unsettled and almost uncomfortably at his mercy.” – Boomkat (U.K.)

MT Coast is an experimental sound artist from Chicago, IL who uses computers to explore the limits of organic and acoustic sounds by processing field recordings, acoustic instruments and by mimicking organic sounds with software. MT Coast uses a process oriented approach to demonstrate the relationships between sounds and their novel concocted counterparts, but more importantly he composes deeply textured pieces intended to call into question the relationship between the natural and synthetic.
