With free live music, colorful cocktails on rotation, a storefront gallery, and an eclectic in-house record label, The Whistler in Logan Square is a wonderful anomaly. Go on a random night and you might hear a worldly acoustic-guitar duo, a dubstep DJ, or an improvisational jazz outfit. Movie buffs can enjoy the monthly “Movieoke” or a foreign-film screening.

The cocktails are some of the best in the city. You really can’t go wrong with any of them; just be prepared to have your heart broken when your favorite rotates off the menu. There’s never a cover charge either, so the money that you’re saving to hear great music can go directly toward an even better drink. The room itself is small with a long, narrow standing area by the bar, so watching a performance can be awkward. If you’re going specifically to watch music—and there’s something booked nearly every night—get there early and grab a table up front.
