Shamisen virtuoso Satō Michiyoshi is an award-winning performer of Tsugaru-jamisen, the dynamic style of music of the shamisen, a three-stringed Japanese banjo. This musical style has been adapted for contemporary audiences, and Michiyoshi glides between traditional, jazz, pop, and neo-folk modes. On his first US tour, he demonstrates the range and flexibility of the instrument, with introductory remarks by Joshua Solomon. Reception to follow in Classics 110.
