The Astronomer evokes the song construction and lyricism of The Band and mid-period Kinks, while sonically akin to releases by Brian Eno and Brian Wilson. The Astronomer’s self-titled debut is a collection of hopeful and naive tales wrapped in rustic orchestrations of pedal steel, vibraphone, upright bass, creaking electronics and floating voice. Charles Kim has played with bands and artists such as Will Oldham, Boxhead Ensemble, Ken Vandermark, and Fruit Bats.
Michael Sanchez returns as The Electric Dylan Controversy. Much like the time he spent away from music, touring as a stand-up comedian, he is again alone, choosing to forgo the camaraderie and dysfunction of traditional bands in favor of a solo format consisting of live drums and vocals accompanied by electronic loops and samples.
